Webinar with Drs. Ann Trescott, Robyn Fisher and Enchantee Minor from the University of California at San Diego/California State University System’s Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project

Over 30 percent of Mexican American and nearly 50 percent of African American students who were accepted into the California state university system in 2017 were identified as needing mathematics remediation. The remedial math-trap many times inhibits students’ progress in course work and college degree conferment. So, the question begs - How do we support secondary mathematics teachers in their efforts toward student success in current and subsequent courses through the lens of college readiness without the need for remediation? This question is the foundation for the work of professional developers in California seeking to increase equity access to mathematics for all students, especially those student populations historically underrepresented in the STEM fields. This online session will address the framework of the professional development practices used in this model, successes and challenge in the work, and elicit discussion on key components of equity-based practices in education.
