Touro’s Graduate School of Education Welcomes Second Holmes Master’s Cohort
Program Aims to Support Historically Underrepresented Populations in Education
Touro’s Graduate School of Education welcomed its second cohort of Holmes Master’s candidates. The Holmes program, administered by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), guides students who self-identify as racially and ethnically diverse as they pursue graduate degrees in education. “Usually underprivileged and historically under-represented students have trouble navigating educational programs on the master’s and doctoral levels in the educational field,” stated Dr. William Cook, Associate Director of the Lander Center for Educational Research at Touro’s Graduate School of Education, and director of the Holmes Master’s program at Touro. “The Holmes Scholars programs will alleviate that by providing guidance and support to our Holmes Masters as they become leaders in the field of education.”
Candidates in the program join a national network of fellow Holmes Scholars and enjoy opportunities and support from peer networks, program administrators, and alumni mentors. The program also helps participants explore a variety of career options related to education.
The second class of two candidates was accepted into the Touro Holmes Master’s Program in February 2022. Participants were selected through a rigorous process and demonstrated high academic performance and a commitment to inclusivity, diversity, equity, advocacy, and leadership (IDEAL). Each candidate receives mentorship and networking opportunities and is expected to conduct an original research project and to present it at the annual AACTE conference.
